Vodafone and EE are switching off their 3G networks early this year to make room for faster 4G and 5G services. Three UK will follow by the end of 2024 and O2 in 2025. These changes will affect people who use older handsets that aren’t able to connect to 4G/5G networks.
Here’s what you need to know:
Once the network has been switched off, 3G phones will only make calls and texts over 2G networks; you won’t have internet access unless connected to Wi-Fi (Three users need 4G/5G as the company doesn’t have a 2G network).
If you have a 4G/5G ready phone, you don’t need to do anything. Upgrades to 4G handsets can cost as little as £10-£15 from places like Amazon, TESCO, ASDA any many others.
